The Chair of Communication Networks is part of the Communications Laboratory and has been directed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Frank H.P. Fitzek since September 2014. The main focus of its research is concentrated in the fifth generation mobile communications (5G), network coding (NC), compressed sensing (CS), software defined networks (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV), and cloud computing (CC).

The Communication Networks Chair is a participant in the specialized research sector SFB 912: Highly Adaptive Energy-Efficient Computing (HAEC) and the Exzellenzcluster Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed).

In addition, Prof. Fitzek is the coordinator of the 5G Lab Germany at the TU Dresden, which encompasses an interdisciplinary team of 22 professors and almost 600 employees from various research institutes.
